CLIDrag CLIDrag 1.0.0

Copy and initiate drag-and-drop operations from the command line.

Requires: Mac OS X 10.3

Introduction

CLIDrag allows drag-and-drop operations to be initiated from the command line. It supports dragging of a number of different data types including files, text and images. It has a flexible command line interface and an attractive appearance. It also allows the command line to change the contents of the clipboard.

Drag and drop is a very important tool in the GUI arsenal, but was previously not accessible from the command line. Advanced shell features make the feature even more useful than before. One less reason for switching to the Finder.

CLIDrag can drag a number of different types of data, including text (from a number of sources), pictures and URLs. In addition to dragging, it can also place this data on the clipboard.

Rationale

Sometimes it feels like there are only two types of Mac OS X users: Purist command line UNIX Hackers and Classic Mac OS fanatics. If that's truly the case, there would be little use for this program.

Personally, I've come to love both these worlds and fly between the Terminal and GUI applications constantly. Some things that are excessively complicated on the command line can be done with clean direct-manipulation efficiency in a graphical environment. On the other hand, sorting through thousands of files in the Finder, looking for those that contain a specific regular expression is virtually impossible ("Spotlight" may or may not change that).

With two environments that complement each other so well, I think it is sad that they're not more integrated. Except for open, pbcopy and a few odd tools like them, there are few facilities for bringing data back and forth between the environments. CLIDrag adds some additional integration between the two. Consider it a start.

I think that there are many users like me out there. Former Mac users who discovered a whole new way to interact with computers by text and UNIX people who are realizing how much more usable a point-and-click interface can be for some tasks.
